Rosewood Mayakoba sits along the Caribbean just north of Playa del Carmen, threaded with freshwater lagoons and mangroves, and the best way to arrive is the way we did: by small electric boat, gliding past suites that seem to float on the water.
Forma brought a small group of planners here for a few days together. The first afternoon was spent finding our way around: the lagoon suites with their plunge pools and outdoor showers, the palms and cabanas along the beach, a coconut stand, and pools that run right up to the sand.
Before dinner we stopped into Zapote, the resort's restaurant, all warm wood, lantern light and a jungle courtyard, with a painted calavera standing guard at the door.
The next morning I sent the drone up at sunrise. A rainbow hung over the mangroves, the lagoons were perfectly still, and the beach was empty except for the waves. Then a slow walk back through the gardens, past the stone paths and the pools catching the first light.
